Historical Context

Updated: May 9, 2019

While most of the story may not be factual, some parts are based on real events. The geographical setting paints a strong depiction of Northern Ireland.

The northern border of Ireland is lined with lakes, forest, and hills.

United Kingdom

Ulaid

The political center of the Ulaid was at Emain Macha, also known as Navan Fort.

St. Patrick was the most successful christian missionary at the time and had a strong relationship with the rulers of the region.

St. Patricks Cathedral is still regarded today, as the church of Ireland. The rulers and champions of the Ulster cycle are of great importance since Irish sagas from the Middle Ages use them extensively. The book of the Dun Cow contains language dated back to the 8th century but was most likely circulated verbally several hundreds years before that time.
